What It Does

Ventolin is a bronchodilator drug that makes it easier to breathe. Ventolin is used for symptomatic relief of bronchial contractions in asthma; relief of severe acute and chronic cramps of the airways (COPD).

Learn more about the symptoms of COPD by link: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

How It Works

Ventolin is a selective B2-adrenoceptor agonists. At therapeutic doses, it affects the B2-adrenergic receptors of the bronchi, providing bronchodilator effect. The effect on B1-adrenergic receptors of myocardium is minimal or absent. Ventolin inhibits the release of leukotrienes, histamine, prostaglandin and other biologically active substances from mast cell. Suppresses bronchial reactivity (early and late), increases lung capacity, reduce airway resistance, activates the function of the ciliated epithelium, increases mucociliary clearance and mucus secretion, as well as has a pronounced bronchodilator effect. It prevents bronchospasm induced allergen. Ventolin is used for the prevention or relief of bronchospasm. The drug affects insulin secretion and glycogenolysis, reduces the concentration of potassium in blood plasma, has a hyperglycemic and lipolytic effect can cause acidosis. At therapeutic doses Ventolin inhaler has no adverse effect on the cardiovascular system, causes no increase in blood pressure. The drug promotes the expansion of the coronary arteries, it has a positive chronotropic and inotropic effect.

How It Is Taken

Ventolin nebuliser solution should only be administered via nebulizer. The solution is not for injection or oral use. Individual dosage adjustments should be made for each patient.

During an attack, the patient may need to temporarily increase the dose. If asthma symptoms remain uncontrolled or patients deteriorate after a temporary increase of the dose, seek medical advice as soon as possible. Side effects may be associated with higher doses of the drug. The maximum recommended daily dose should not be exceeded.

Recommended dosage:

Adults and children aged 12 years and older:

1 single-dose (2.5, respectively. 5 mg) is inhaled via nebulizer. Treatment can be given 4 times daily and can if necessary be repeated with 1-2 hour intervals.

Paediatric population:

For children under 12 years is an appropriate starting dose of salbutamol inhaled via nebulizer 2.5 mg. Treatment can be given 4 times daily.

The effect of Ventolin Nebulizer for children below 4 years have not been established. Dosage recommendations cannot be made.

In the treatment of children under 18 months with salbutamol nebuliser a good clinical effect cannot always be expected. When transient hypoxemia may be present, additional oxygen supply should be considered. Other dosage forms may be more appropriate for administration to children under age 4.

Is It For Me?

In bronchial asthma: prevention and relief of bronchospasm, as a component in the complex treatment of bronchial asthma (including status asthmaticus). From prevention to apply directly before contact with the allergen, or before exercise. Ventolin is used and in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is accompanied by reversible obstruction of the bronchial tubes.

Do not use Ventolin in case of hypersensitivity to any component of the drug. Do not use this drug in children up to six years if not otherwise indicated by the prescriber. To use caution in patients with chronic heart failure, arterial hypertension, thyrotoxicosis, tachyarrhythmias, pheochromocytoma, as well as during pregnancy and lactation.

Any Drug Interactions or Incompatibilities?

A few cases have been reported in which the combination of nebulised salbutamol and ipratropium bromide triggered narrow-angle glaucoma. The combination is discouraged in susceptible patients. Hypokalaemia may be potentiated by concomitant treatment with xantinderviat, steroids or diuretics. Non-selective beta-adrenoceptor blockers can completely inhibit the effect of salbutamol.

You cannot simultaneously use Ventolin and selective beta-blockers (propranolol). With simultaneous use with thyrotoxicosis, Ventolin tachycardia increases. It also enhances the action of drugs that stimulate the central nervous system. It increases the likelihood of developing arrhythmias in patients receiving cardiac glycosides. Ventolin is not contraindicated in patients who are taking MAO inhibitors. Theophylline and other xanthine, while taking with Ventolin increase the risk of tachyarrhythmias. When taken together with inhalation anesthesia and levodopa there may arise ventricular arrhythmias. When co-administered with Ventolin, anticholinergics can increase intraocular pressure. Corticosteroids and diuretics may enhance hypokalemia caused by the use of Ventolin.

What Side Effects Should I Brace Myself For?

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Side effects are classified into the following categories: very common (occurring in more than 1 in 10), common (occurring in more than 1 in 100), uncommon (affecting less than 1 person in 100), rare (affects less than 1 in 1000) and very rare (affects less than 1 person in 10 000).

Common: Tremor. Increased heart rate. Headache. Muscle cramps.

Uncommon: Palpitations. Irritation of the mouth and throat.

Rare: Decreased blood potassium levels. The enlargement of superficial blood vessels that can cause redness and heat sensation of the skin.

Very rare: hypersensitivity reactions, e.g., itching and rash (hives), swelling of the face, tongue and / or throat (angioedema), bronchospasm, hypotension. Hyperactivity and sleep disorders. Irregular heartbeat. Lactic acidosis (a condition with increased lactic acid production in the body). Chest pain (signs of angina). If chest pain (signs of angina) should occur, you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible. Do not, however, cancel the treatment on your own. Inhalation therapy through mechanisms not understood can cause bronchospasm.

Tremors and palpitations can occur, especially in early treatment. These usually disappear after a certain period of use.
