What It Does?

Bentyl (Dicyclomine) is an antispasmodic and reduces spasms of smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and has a direct effect on the smooth muscle and acts as an antagonist of cholinergic receptors.

How It Works?

Bentyl is an anticholinergic drug. The drug has antispasmodic and antisecretory effect due to the effect of acetylcholine receptors on the smooth muscle and intestine.

Bentyl is prescribed for spasm of the smooth muscle layer of the intestine to patients suffering from colitis, intestinal colic, spastic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Bentyl can also be used in the treatment of patients with diverticulitis, colitis, enteritis, peptic ulcer and gastritis.

How It Is Taken?

Bentyl pills should be taken following your prescriber's mandate. Take the pill of Bentyl whole and do not chew it or crush it in your mouth. Wash down with sufficient amount of water. The drug can be taken after a meal or in a fasted state.

Adults and adolescents are usually recommend to take one tablet of Bentyl four times a day. The maximum recommended daily dose is 4 tablets. The drug is not recommended to be taken during more than five days in a row.

Is It For Me?

Bentyl not indicated in patients with hypersensitivity to dicyclomine. Bentyl is not prescribed to patients suffering from paralytic ileus, obstructive bowel disease, severe ulcerative colitis, pyloric stenosis, gastrointestinal tract obstruction, and reflux esophagitis. Bentyl should not be used in acute bleeding (with unstable cardiovascular status), severe kidney disease, prostate cancer, which is accompanied by urinary retention, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, and heart failure. During pregnancy and lactation the drug Bentyl prohibited. Care should be taken when prescribing Bentyl to patients with autonomic neuropathy, ulcerative colitis, hyperthyroidism, liver disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure and ischemic heart disease, as well as tachycardia, tachyarrhythmia, prostatic hypertrophy, and hiatal hernia. Bentyl is not administered to children under the age of 12 years. In patients whose work requires attention, care should be taken during therapy with Bentyl.

Any Drug Interactions or Incompatibilities?

Effects of dicyclomine, including side effects, may enhance drug with anticholinergic activity: amantadine, class I antiarrhythmics (eg quinidine), antihistamines drugs, antipsychotic drugs (e.g. phenothiazines), benzodiazepines, MAO inhibitors, narcotic analgesics, nitrates and nitrites, sympathomimetic, tricyclic antidepressants.

Anticholinergic drugs counteract with the effects of antiglaucoma agents. In the presence of elevated intraocular pressure anticholinergic drugs can be dangerous during the use of corticosteroids; can interfere with the absorption of digoxin in the gastrointestinal tract and resulting in increase of digoxin concentration in the serum; may counteract with the effects of substances that alter the motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract (metoclopramide). Antacids may affect the absorption of anticholinergic drugs should be avoided joint application. Inhibition of anticholinergic drugs of hydrochloric acid secretion counteracts the effects of substances used to treat achlorhydria or gastric secretion test.

What Side Effects Should I Brace Myself For?

Bentyl can drastically diminish production of hydrochloride acid during secretion of gastric acid.

This can cause dryness of the mouth, nausea, and at higher doses, delirium.

On the part of the central nervous system and sensory organs: tinnitus, diplopia, disturbance of accommodation, decreased vision, headache, increased intraocular pressure, weakness, confusion, insomnia, and impaired motor coordination.

On the part of the heart and blood vessels: palpitations, tachycardia.

On the part of the gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting, dry mucous membranes of the mouth, constipation, feeling of fullness, loss of appetite, pain in the epigastric region, and change in taste. In some cases diarrhea is observed, which requires discontinuation of the drug therapy and consulting a physician.
