Before you buy Allopurinol onlineWhat It Does
Allopurinol is used to treat gout condition with abnormally high uric acid levels in serum, especially in connection with gouty nephropathy or urate stones. It can be also appointed for secondary gout and secondary hyperuricemia brought on by diseases with excessive nucleoprotein catabolism (acute and chronic leukemia, polycythemia vera, myeloma, etc.).
Allopurinol can be used as prophylaxis against uric acid nephropathy during intensive treatment of neoplastic conditions with radiotherapy or antineoplastic preparations where fast tissue destruction may occur.
How It Works
Allopurinol(Zyloprim) inhibits the body's uric acid synthesis by blocking the enzyme xanthine oxidase. Xanthine oxidase catalyzes the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. Thus reducing the uric acid level in serum and the rate of urate excretion in urine decreases, which leads to the mobilization and dissolution of urate deposition in tissues. The formation of urate stones and gravel in the urine is thus prevented.
How It Is Taken
In mild cases adults should be given 100-200mg daily. In moderate cases, 300-600mg daily. In severe cases, doses up to 700-900mg daily is required. Up to 300mg Allopurinol Nordic Drugs can be given in a single dose. Doses greater than 300mg should be divided over the day.
Children 6-10 years: 100mg 3 times daily.
Children under 6 years: 50mg 3 times daily.
Is It For Me?
You should not use Allopurinol if you are allergic to the main medicinal ingredient or any other ingredients of this medicine (magnesium stearate, gelatine, sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, talc, corn starch, colloidal anhydrous silica).
Any Drug Interactions or Incompatibilities?
The following combinations with Allopurinol may require dose adjustment: ampicillin, azathioprine, cyclosporine, cyclophosphamide, mercaptopurine, and theophylline.
Substances that increase the excretion of uric acid probenecid and high doses of salicylates, may increase excretion of Allopurinol's major metabolite, oxypurinol, which in turn can lead to reduced therapeutic effect of Allopurinol. This must be assessed case by case.
There have been rare reports of increased effect of warfarin and other coumarin anticoagulants when co-treatment with Allopurinol (Zyloprim). Patients being treated with coumarin anticoagulants should be closely monitored.
