Viagra for Treatment of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms
Wednesday 27th of December 20172017/12/27
Impotence in men is often combined with urological diseases. This is due to the fact that erectile and urinary problems mostly begin to occur at about the same time, namely after 40. Fortunately, some drugs for ED treatment like Viagra can also help in case of urinary symptoms. These drugs are inhibitors of PDE5. Keep reading to know more.
How do PDE5 Inhibitors InfluenceLower Urinary Tract?
Some disorders of human urinary tract may be treated by influencing the smooth musculature of urethra, prostate, and urinary bladder.
These disorders include:
urinary stones;
urinary tract problems associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (or BPH, formerly known as adenoma);
detrusor hyperactivity.
Cyclic GMP substance is a significant mediator influencing the outflow area (urethra and bladder). The application of PDE5 inhibitor meds like sildenafil (brand name Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), & vardenafil (Levitra) suppresses the decay of cGMP. This offers good opportunities in treating ailments of lower urinary tract. The beneficial effect of PDE5 inhibitors for urinary symptoms was proven in multiple studies, in particular, those conducted by K.T. McVary and others (2007), O. Yokoyama et al. (2013), M. Umul et al. (2013).
However, it should be borne in mind that other drugs used for handling these symptoms may interact negatively with PDE inhibitors.
For example, a study by M. Umul showed that alpha-blockers that are widely used to treat negative symptoms caused by increased prostate size could lead to orthostatic hypotension (lowered blood pressure that occurs when a person stands up from sitting/lying position) when combined with PDE5 inhibitors. Therefore, before starting treatment with PDE5 inhibitors, it is very important to tell the doctor about all the drugs that you take.
It is important: never take PDE5 inhibitors if you are treated with nitrates. The combination of these drugs can be very dangerous for health and even life.

Sildenafil for Urinary Tract Symptoms
Back in 2002, British scientists (K. Sairam and others) discovered that Generic Viagra enhanced condition of urinary tract. 112 men suffering from erection problems were taking Viagra/Sildenafil orally. At the end of the first and third month of the treatment, they filled out a special questionnaire called International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS).
Most men experienced improvement after being treated with sildenafil citrate.
A similar conclusion was made in a study by J.P. Mulhall et al. (2006). Scientists reported that Viagra had a positive effect on male persons who had mild/moderate urinary symptoms. However, experts believe that this issue requires further study in terms of identifying the safety of sildenafil therapy. They think that such therapy is likely to be safe, but additional research is still needed.
Cialis – Officially Approved Drug for BPH
Cialis that appeared on the market in 2003 is a well-known drug for treating erectile problems. It is produced by American pharma giant called Eli Lilly. As it is known, the main active agent of the drug is tadalafil. The continued use of Cialis showed that the medication was effective for the treatment of BPH. Therefore, Eli Lilly's specialists conducted the necessary studies and tests that allowed them to apply for approval of Cialis as a drug for BPH treatment. In 2011, the US FDA gave an appropriate permission.
What is BPH?
It is a non-cancerous formation, caused by abnormal prostate tissue growth. Normally, the gland is small and covers the canal of the urethra, located in the lower part of the bladder. The increase in the size of the gland co-occur with the contraction of the urethral canal, it provokes disturbances in the process of urination. BPH is a slowly progressing condition whose clinical picture is characterized by a “wavy” course and may be accompanied by periods of symptomatic deterioration, stabilization and improvement. With timely diagnosis and adequate treatment, the disease is treatable with oral medications, but “neglected” cases of prostate adenoma require surgical intervention.

In addition to treating ED symptoms, Cialis (tadalafil) also relaxes muscle tissues in the bladder & prostate. Therefore, it may be helpful in case of BPH by easing its urinary manifestations.
The drug helps to get rid of the following unpleasant BPH symptoms:
frequent urination at night, which can be very exhausting;
frequent urination during the day time;
weak stream of urine;
dribbling after urination.
How to Take Cialis for BPH Treatment?
There are two approaches to the use of Generic Cialis. They are "as needed" and on an everyday basis. The first approach is suitable for those men who have irregular sex and take an anti-ED tablet when they need it. The second approach is suitable for those who don’t like to plan sex and want to achieve a permanent effect. In addition, taking Cialis (5mg) daily may help a male to reduce BPH symptoms. It turns out that this pill makes it possible to kill 2 birds with one stone (the first “bird” is ED and the second one is BPH). It is advantageous for those men who suffer from ED and BPH at the same time. If a male suffers from BPH only, such drugs as Flomax (tamsulosin) may be preferable.
PDE5 inhibitors can help in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms with mild/moderate severity. However, only one tablet is officially approved for use for this purpose (we mean Cialis). Studies show that other PDE5i meds may also help, but they do not have the appropriate approval from state bodies. Now Generic Viagra and its “brethren” are usually not used on a daily basis, so they are not able to provide a permanent effect for lower urinary tract.
The question of long-term therapy with these drugs requires further investigation.
While the brightest minds of the pharmaceutical world are applying phenomenal resources trying to create ...
