Often patients taking Viagra use natural supplements to improve erectile function. It is commonly believed, that herb-based and animal-based supplements are completely safe for health and can be freely combined with various medications. But this is not so.
Sometimes Viagra is taken jointly with arginine supplements. Is it safe?
Viagra and Its Mechanism of Action
Viagra pills belong to the group of PDE5 inhibitors. The name "PDE5 inhibitor" generally refers to the mechanism of action of this potent drug. Sildenafil Citrate (an active agent of Viagra) suppresses PDE5, which is located in the penile tissues. PDE5 is an enzyme that inhibits cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), an essentially important compound for normal penile erection.
During sex stimulation, NO is released from the cavernous structures, which activates the special enzyme guanylate cyclase, resulting in a higher cGMP level in the cavernous bodies. Because of this, the smooth musculature of the cavernous structure relaxes, and the influx of blood into the penis increases.
By suppressing PDE5 and increasing the level of cGMP, Canadian Viagra provides a relaxation of the blood vessels in the male organ, which leads to an increase in the degree of reaction to sexual stimulation and improvement of erectile function. According to the studies, the drug is effective in 80-85% of cases when using 50mg & 100mg dosages.
Other features of this drug include:
- fast onset of action (30-60 min);
- sufficient time of action (up to 6 hours, sometimes longer);
- high safety profile;
- a small number of contraindications;
- low price (if you choose Generic Viagra).
It is important to note that Viagra does not work if a male person is not sexually aroused, that is, it does not cause an unwanted erection. This medication mustn’t be combined with medicines from the nitrate group because of the risk of a serious lowering of arterial pressure.

Since both Viagra and arginine can affect blood pressure, the safety issue of their combination has arisen.
What Is Arginine?
Arginine (L-Arginine) is a natural amino acid (amino). Aminos are compounds that are building blocks for the protein in the organism. They also perform other functions.
There are three types of amino acids:
- Essential. The body cannot synthesize them, so you should receive them with food. This is, for example, BCAA.
- Nonessential. The human body synthesizes a sufficient number of them to ensure the normal operation of organs and systems. They include glutamine, glycine, proline, and others.
- Semi essential (or conditionally essential). This group is represented by histidine & arginine. These aminos may be essential in certain situations.
Arginine can be synthesized in the body from citrulline, ornithine and ADMA (dimethylarginine).
Uses of Arginine
Arginine-based supplements may be used in the treatment of heart failure, chest pain, blood pressure, erectile problems, and also for recovery after surgery.
Is arginine effective for ED? In a small study by J. Chen et al. conducted back in 1999 and published in the British Journal of Urology International, it was found that the use of L-arginine in an amount of 5 g per day did not show positive result in men with ED. However, there was an improvement in the subgroup of men who had low rates of nitrate & nitrites in the urine (markers of NO level in the body). It is possible that the use of L-arginine will be effective for this subgroup of men with ED.
In addition, arginine is very popular in sports. It is one of the main components in the pre-workout supplements. Sportsmen usually take it before exercising to improve blood circulation and muscle pump. It is believed that this improves the delivery of nutrients to the muscles, which has a positive effect on athletic performance. Moreover, better muscle pump gives psychological benefits to the athlete. Muscles temporarily increase in size, which is very pleasing to the athlete. It energizes and gives extra strength.
Warning: consult a doctor about the possible use of arginine if you suffer from diabetes, because this natural substance can affect blood glucose levels. Also, you shouldn’t take arginine with nitrates and antihypertensive medications.
How Does Arginine Act in the Body?
Here is what arginine does in the human body:
- Is used as a material for the synthesis of nitric oxide (or NO), which leads to vascular relaxation and improves blood flow;
- enhances the functioning of the immune system;
- helps the kidneys remove waste from the organism;
- accelerates recovery after injury.
According to Healthline, taking arginine may lead to some side effects, such as diarrhea & upset stomach. There are also some risks associated with the combination of arginine and other medications.
Simultaneous Use of Viagra and Arginine – Is It Safe?
Simultaneous use of sildenafil and arginine can lead to a significant lowering of blood pressure. By itself, Viagra has an insignificant effect on blood pressure, but potentiating its effect with arginine leading to drop in pressure can be unpleasant and even dangerous. Therefore, it is not recommended to use these two remedies at the same time.
The good news is that arginine, contained in protein products, is completely safe for health.
High-arginine foods include:
- pumpkin seeds (pepita);
Regular intake of these products will allow you to boost arginine levels naturally. This method of increasing arginine safely combines with the use of Viagra. In addition, some products from this list, namely pumpkin seeds and spirulina can positively affect a man's sexual function.
The Bottom Line on Combining Viagra (Generic Viagra) and Arginine
Arginine supplements are not beneficial for all men and are much less effective than Viagra. You can take arginine for sports purposes or to improve sexual function in the absence of ED. However, in case of serious problems, it is unlikely to help. Accordingly, it makes no sense to combine Viagra with arginine, because this combination can lead to side effects (lowering arterial pressure). If your doctor prescribed Viagra, do not use arginine.
