Can Cialis Shrink the Prostate?

02 March of 2018

According to epidemiological data, the symptoms of two health disorders commonly experienced by aging male persons – benign prostate hyperplasia (or BPH) and impotence (ED) – are linked by similar pathophysiological pathways. Doctors prescribe patients with enlarged prostate gland tadalafil in the dosage of 5 mg once a day irrespective of their having comorbid ED. It means that Cialis can shrink the prostate. Cialis – Key Features

Cialis is one of top medicines for fighting erectile dysfunction of any form of severity. It was developed by a group of companies in the 1990s, and in the early 2000s Eli Lilly company started to manufacture it. Cialis quickly gained popularity due to its unique feature – its duration of action was much longer than that of Viagra. Cialis remains to be record keeper in this respect, as it acts as long as 36 hours! In addition, its producers offer a convenient treatment option – the use on an everyday basis without any need to plan sex. It has turned out that Cialis can be good for the prostate condition when used on a daily basis.

Cialis and BPH Approval

In October 2011, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Cialis for the treatment of prostate enlargement by shrinking this organ. At the same time, it can be used simultaneously to treat ED & enlarged prostate when choosing a daily option. It helps to eliminate such frustrating symptoms as difficulties in starting urination, a weak or poor urine flow, a sudden strong desire to urinate and frequent toilet visits at night. The FDA approval of Cialis as a remedy for the treatment of prostate enlargement symptoms was issued on the basis of an analysis of several clinical trials that showed that Cialis tablets at a dosage of 5 mg improved the symptoms of BPH.

Among these clinical studies were:

  1. The research by G., Broderick, G. Brock et al. (2010). Scientists found out that Cialis effectively treated ED and prostate enlargement and was generally well-tolerated by male individuals, both those who suffered from ED and those who did not have problems with erection.

  2. The research by H. Porst and E. Kim (2011). A group of men used Cialis for 12 weeks. The results of the ED treatment were visible after 1 week of the drug administration however, the maximum efficacy was achieved after 4 weeks. Improvements in BPH symptoms began to be observed after 4 weeks, but it should be noted that their assessment was not carried out until this point. This study allows us to draw the following conclusions: Cialis in low dosages shows its anti-ED effect not immediately. The same goes for BPH.

  3. The research by C. Donatucci, G. Brock et al. (2011). It was a long-term study that lasted for 1 year. It proved the safety of Cialis in the long-term treatment of urinary symptoms. The treatment was accompanied by side effects in some male individuals, but those side effects were generally mild.

According to director of the reproductive and urologic products division under the USFDA, Scott Monroe, BPH affects a male person’s life quality. Cialis can offer a significant relief to a great number of men experiencing BPH symptoms in particular to those who also suffer from ED, he believes.

BPH patients taking α-blockers are recommended to avoid adding Cialis to the regimen of their treatment. This warning is grounded by the lack of appropriate medical trials of the combined use of these drugs which theoretically can cause a sharp blood pressure drop. Cardura* and Flomax** belong to popular α-blockers used to treat BPH.

However, according to more recent information, there are studies that indicate the possibility of combining Cialis with alpha-blockers.

For example, in the study by Regadas et al. 2013, Cialis and Flomax combined therapy was tested, however the researchers found no pronounced improvement from the addition of Cialis to Flomax.

Therefore, do not engage in self-medication, the question of the simultaneous use of these two medicines must be agreed with the attending physician.

Effect of Cialis on Prostate Enlargement

How does Cialis work in patients with BPH? It is known that this drug affects the PDE5 enzyme and promotes the expansion of blood vessels in the male organ, which improves the erection. As for BPH, tadalafil (the basic active agent of Cialis) helps to eliminate the symptoms of this disease by the following ways (according to the study by K. Hatzimouratidis conducted in 2014):

  • regulation of nitric oxide (a vasodilator) and cGMP activity;

  • Rho-kinase (a cell regulator) activity decrease;

  • correction of ANS overactivity;

  • reducing ischemia;

  • reducing inflammatory reactions;

  • pelvic perfusion improvement.

Cialis and Prostate Shrinking – the Conclusion

BPH and ED health disorders share similar symptoms and are associated with common pathophysiological features. Male persons experiencing urinary symptoms with or without comorbid ED condition can take tadalafil (5 mg a day) which is officially approved for treating this condition. The remedy which features a well-known safety profile and proven efficiency can be regarded as a competitive alternative to established treatments.

All in all, if you suffer from ED and BPH simultaneously you can buy Cialis and use it successfully for treating both diseases. If you experience only BPH symptoms you can choose Cialis and improve your sexual function or opt for traditional medicines such as Flomax.
